WAIRERE VALLEY |
The Wairere Valley B&B is situated on a tidal river where ships used to land to take kauri logs on board. The house is an historic homestead built by William Webster one of the first settlers in the Hokianga. He owned the first sawmill in the area and later the first water-driven sawmill which was on the Wairere River. In 1851 the captain of HMS Pandora, who was carrying out the first survey of the Hokianga Harbour came down the Wairere Valley and was very surprised to find in this wild valley as he said "a very respectable young scotsman... ........making ivory keys for an organ for the harmonic society of Auckland" This organ can be seen today in the Auckland Museum |
